not to make this into a pissing contest, but my grandfather was a veteran also: an air force navigator during Korea and a loyal State Department employee for years after. Believe me, smalltown_girl, I'm not making Obama out to be the Savior (because that whole piece of rhetoric is fucking ridiculous); and I don't expect him to snap his fingers and calm the nations that have been at war for "hundreds of years," all that I am saying is that he is the RIGHT choice, considering the alternative is a representative of the most corrupt force in American politics. On a related note, STFU.

I grew up with a similar family situation: single mother, three children--my mom was going to school at night and working during the day. My grandfather didn't tell us stories about history, but he had nightmares about it. He lost a leg in WWII--but he fought for people's freedom--people's lives. We were lucky enough to not have to understand what that meant--children of the '80s. It was only later, after many life experiences, that I started to realize what politics and ideology even meant to my life. Now I know that I learned good lessons from working hard. I learned to appreciate things -- and learned the cold realities that life can hand you in a moment when the center of your universe collapses. I would not have survived the realities of life without those early lessons.

What Barack Obama is selling sounds too good to be true -- for reason. Somehow we can all pay less taxes and get everything we want -- all of us? Healthcare for everyone, college for everyone, no debt, no war? He can solve all the world's problems, just like that. Just more taxes on the big guys and all of our problems are solved? Just sit down and talk to the nations that have been at war for hundreds of years, and suddenly he can solve the problmes. Wow. That's a big plan for someone with no experience and some seriously questionable judgement. But then why does he say in his book that you could tax people up to 100% and that would be OK as long as they got what they needed from government. If you read between the lines it may be possible to figure out how the plan works.

I think your grandpa should trust what his experience tells him -- that hope is not a strategy, something is not for nothing and America is a damn good place to live no matter which side of the tracks you grew up on -- and Barack Obama himself is proof of that. But I don't think he appreciates it.
